Ethics & Legal Policy
At Naturally Odd, we are dedicated to promoting sustainability and ethical sourcing in everything we do. We proudly hold an import/export license that is regulated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, ensuring that we comply with all relevant federal laws and state regulations concerning wildlife. We do not collect, use, or sell any species protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act or CITES, which includes over 40,900 species.
Our collection of dead and dried butterflies, moths, beetles, and other invertebrates, come from sustainable aviaries across the globe. These aviaries play a crucial role in supporting local butterfly rearing communities through the practice of captive farming, with a portion of the butterflies being released back into their native habitats to help bolster population growth. This not only aids in conservation efforts but also provides a vital source of income for these communities, serving as a sustainable alternative to harmful practices like slash-and-burn farming.
We gather nature's resources through a variety of responsible methods, which include tending to our own gardens, foraging, and collecting specimens from natural deaths. Additionally, we accept pet donations, work with taxidermists, and utilize byproducts from farming, hunting, and other industries. It’s important to note that everything we collect is post-mortem, allowing us to honor the natural cycle of life while contributing positively to the environment.
